Robin: Shadow of the Future

Description

This year marked the 75th Anniversary of my favorite member of the Bat-Family, and all time favorite DC Comics character bar none! (admittedly, edging out Zatanna by virtue of being introduced to him first by a few years)

Although I could point to the idea of Robin as a whole, of them, it's the first who got me: Dick Grayson. He managed to work one of the least gracefully aging costumes ever, gets to grow up - and become and awesome hero in his own right, becomes  DC's greatest male sex symbol (I mean come on, Bruce might get supermodels and a few bad girls - but Dick Grayson got all the super heroines, without even having to try!) and eventually - despite where the New 52 went - becomes the de-facto choice for succeeding the Batman cowl, doing a bang up job while he briefly wore it!

The whole point of the character was to connect to kids, and for me? it worked. I've gone as him for Halloween (without a Batman, because...screw that! I didn't need no stinkin' Batman), i've done more fanart of him than most any other DC character, and above all - he inspired me to be a good kid. That said, even after knowing that by the time I discovered him he wasn't Robin and was allowed to move on for many many years - he's still the one i think of when I think of Robin. Mind you, that's not to speak less of his successors - all of whom earned their spot, Jason included, I love them all!

I wanted to celebrate by doing pictures of the whole flock; Dick, Jason, Tim, Stephanie, Carrie (as much as I loathe Frank Miller, I won't deny Carrie), and even the latest group of punks flying his colors, and naturally had to start with the first! Dick, spit curls and all - with a shadow of his future behind him.

My only regret is the coloring job - which might be redone in the future since the damned heat around here ruined my marker drying times resulting in splotchy uneven segments…ugh.

Here’s to 75 More Years of being the Light to Gotham's perpetual darkness!

note: If the Bat-shadow looks familiar, its modeled after the logo for Batman: the Animated Series - the show that actually introduced me to Robin and Dick Grayson.

I really like this. Robin seems so young in this picture, and with the pose almost matching the shadow it definitely speaks to an awesome future. I like the yellow and orange, makes the whole thing feel nice and bright.
