I present to you: Hanuman. Unlike the Monkey King, he doesn't have too many aliases- but if there were any, they would probably include something along the lines of- The Loyal Guardian, The White Monkey, etc etc.

This particular piece was inspired by an old idea of mine...what would happen if Hanuman, the monkey deity of Hinduism and Sun Wukong, the monkey deity of China...came together.

My version of Hanuman as depicted here, is taken from the Indonesian stylizations of the White Monkey- in particular, a combination of various wayang representations, and Balinese mask variants. I chose that in particular as i'm Indonesian (forgive me, those who prefer his original Indian look). As such, he lacks his traditional mace weapon, and instead has the thumb-nails/claws that hold immense powers...I can't even describe them cuz' they're so intense...This would also explain his eyes, and curl behind the crown- traditional elements of wayang- as well as the teeth that show.

Here's a tidbit, many ancient scholars believe that Sun Wukong, and many various monkey deities are takes of stories told of the legend of Hanuman...since he does pre-date most other monkey deities through the religion with which he is attached.

Yet another digital practice...enjoy.

I can't claim the character- but I DO claim the illustration-
this illustration is (C) Alfred Pangkerego 2008

Addendum:
-Utensils- .5 mechanical pencil, Corel Painter IX
-Working Time- 45 mins. penciling, 5-6 hrs. digital painting (yes, the details made it take that long..on top of various issues...coloring him was twice as difficult as the Monkey King...). Total Time: approx. 7 hrs.
